Cannabis and Farmland

HOW CAN WE BETTER UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF CANNABIS CULTIVATION ON FOOD PRODUCTION IN HAMILTON’S PRIME AGRICULTURAL AREAS?

Project Description: Since 2018, some of Hamilton’s prime agricultural land has been granted to cannabis-growing operations, provoking concern about the displacement of food production. To what extent has food production really declined because of cannabis cultivation? If it has, should we be concerned about a possible negative trend? What regulations are in place, and do they need revisiting to ensure that food production remains a priority for Hamilton’s agricultural land? Students could research, report and make proposals on the questions above.
